I’ve been interested in the environment since I was young growing up in Connecticut.
After graduating from Mass College of Art. I had an Arts & Crafts business with my wife for about 10 years. During that time I also worked as a teacher in the public school system. Following teaching, I was at Continental Cable where I worked as a reporter, editor, videographer and producer. While there I produced an environmental series called “The Adventure Crew” and a weekly segment called “Local Wonders”. For the past 13 years, I worked as a videographer/editor for a major Boston TV News station. I am also going to be doing presentations in conjunction with the hike I did of the New England Portion of the Appalachian Trail to bring awareness to the preservation of nature and the protection of resources. Most recently, I am hiking the 200 miles of the Bay Circuit Trail in Massachusetts from Newburyport to Duxbury while doing a video. |
MARILYN BRIELMAN
My name is Marilyn and I’m the other half of e-Awakening
I grew up In Massachusetts in a home where we lived by the 3 Rs: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. After graduating from New England School of Art, I was the other half of the Arts and Crafts business with Dan. I was an access producer at Continental Cablevision where I won an award for “The Children’s Monthly News Show”. I did the show for over two years in collaboration with my husband. e-Awakening’s Mission .... is to tell green stories and to get the messages out that need to be told. Our major focuses are on the “Preservation of Nature and Protection of Resources” while building a sustainable, healthy world. We want to shine the spotlight on the individuals, groups and organizations that are making differences every day. This is a very important part of e-Awakening. Our aim is to tell these positive stories that inspire us and we hope they will also inspire you our viewers. |

1. CHANGE YOUR LIGHT``S
If every household in the United State replaced one regular lightbulb with one of those new compact fluorescent bulbs, the pollution reduction would be equivalent to removing one million cars from the road.
Don't like the color of light? Use these bulbs for closets, laundry rooms and other places where it won't irk you as much.

.8. GO VEGETARIAN ONCE A WEEK
One less meat-based meal a week helps the planet and your diet. For example: It requires 2,500 gallons of water to produce one pound of beef. You will also save some trees. For each hamburger that originated from animals raised on rainforest land, approximately 55 square feet of forest have been destroyed.

21. SECOND-HAND DOESN'T MEAN SECOND-BEST
Consider buying items from a second-hand store. Toys, bicycles, roller blades, and other age and size-specific items are quickly outgrown. Second hand stores often sell these items in excellent condition since they are used for such a short period of time, and will generally buy them back when you no longer need them.

45. FIND A BETTER WAY TO BREAK THE ICE
When a big winter storm heads our way, most of us use some sort of ice melter to treat steps and sidewalks. While this makes the sidewalks safer for people, it may pose a hazard for pets who might ingest these products. Rock salt and salt-based ice-melting products can cause health problems as well as contaminate wells and drinking water. Look for a pet-safe deicer, readily available in many stores.

46. USE COTTON SWABS WITH A PAPERBOARD SPINDLE
Some brands of cotton swabs have a paperboard spindle while others are made of plastic. If 10% of U.S. households switched to a paperboard spindle, the petroleum energy saved per year would be equivalent to over 150,000 gallons of gasoline.

47. PAY BILLS ONLINE
By some estimates, if all households in the U.S. paid their bills online and received electronic statements instead of paper, we'd save 18.5 million trees every year, 2.2 billion tons of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, and 1.7 billion pounds of solid waste.

Some banks will pay you a dollar or donate money on your behalf when you cancel the monthly paper statements you get in the mail. If every household took advantage of online bank statements, the money saved could send more than seventeen thousand recent high school graduates to a public university for a year.

49. USE RECHARGABLE BATTERIES
Each year 15 billion batteries produced and sold and most of them are disposable alkaline batteries. Only a fraction of those are recycled. Buy a charger and a few sets of rechargeable batteries. Although it requires an upfront investment, it is one that should pay off in no time. And on Christmas morning when all the stores are closed? You'll be fully stocked.

~ Our Planet ~
Earth Day is celebrated every year on April 22nd. Take some time to find out about how one man, who was determined to change the way we treated our planet, didn't stop until he had made a difference.
Making The World A Better Place In 1963, Senator Gaylord Nelson wasn't happy with the earth's condition. He wanted to clean up the planet and solve pollution and environmental problems. As a senator, Gaylord Nelson was someone chosen by US citizens to help make laws, so he had a lot of power. He went to John F. Kennedy, the President at the time, with his concerns. The President agreed that the planet's environment was a serious issue, so President Kennedy went around the country on a five day tour to promote the idea of cleaning up the planet. People began making small changes, but it wasn't enough.
Becoming an Official Holiday A few years later, Senator Nelson decided to put one day aside every year for the cause of saving the planet. On April 22, 1970, the first Earth Day was celebrated. Since then, Earth Day has become an international holiday. People all over the world are doing something to make Earth a cleaner, better place. Kidzworld along with founder, Allen Achilles, make an extra effort to protect the environment by recycling all used electronics.

HOW
?
Leave a comment at bottom and let me know hOW you will celebrate earth day next year 2015
I do every day if I can, and when I can.
Here are some idea`s & Stories
~ GLASS JAR`S ~
Glass jar`s that can be re-useable. I do save glass jar`s because I can see what I have in them.
Like lose nails, or maybe some odd screws and washers. I use glass jar`s for my left over paint sitting in the bottom of a big gallon can. And when the glass jar is empty it is washable to use again.
After I empty the gallon can of latex paint I wash the can out and put in the recycle bin.
I get many gallon paint can`s from my hobby making woodcrafts
OR
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
~ GALLON PAINT CAN`S ~
Many times I will recycle the paint can and use it to re-plant a new young tree or bush I got from my yard and give it away to anyone who would like it, I would decorate the can by painting it with flowers or something that is attractive and offer it free to anyone who had stop by to buy a bird house from me.
Last year my tomato plants were to small and young to be put in to the ground, I might have lost some if I did. So I re-plant the plants in to the gallon paints can`s until they were strong enough to be on thier own, then I would plant the tomato plant can and all . By doing this, it will save lots of water during the sommer. the water will stay with the plant longer being in the can, and I found out I used less water. So I made out all around, I saved the plants from drying, I saved the paint can and re-used it, and I even saved on water useage, and saved money on my water bill .LO

Aluminum Soda & Beer Can`s
Remember what you read up above about Aluminum can`s?
One recycled can will give enough energy to run your T.V for three hours. So please think about it. Save the can in a plasic bag and cash them in each month.
*
Story
What I do is collect my can`s in a plastic bag, and leave it on my door step for a person I saw collecting them one day. We made arrangement for her to come by my house on the last Thursday of the month to pick them up. Because Thursday is my rubbish day and she is out collecting anyways.
But can you see I saved by recycling? I save it from going to the dump, and I made a person very happy making some extra money
360,000 - CAN`s
( Story )
A few years back I had collected 360,000 soda & beer cans that total to the amount of $18,000 dollars.
I had donated all the money to the
Children`s Happiness Foundation
For the very sick children`s dreams.

I also heard about a fellow employee who`s wife was very ill with cancer, I was told thier dream was to own a Bed & Breakfast bussines up in the state of N H. one day. A few months had past and again I heard my pal`s wife was getting worse, so I was in the position to give this employee some time off at work and to take his Wife and himself up to N.H to the best looking and fine dinning Bed & Breakfast they knew witch would be paid for from my collecting of soda can`s with a check for $ 1,500.
Can you see what you can do with very little effort each month by saving your can`s and the money.
Maybe you can help some one that you know is in the need of a helpping hand.
OR A WISH.

One morning when I went in to my work shop, and notice all the bottles were scratted all around the shop and they all were half full. that is when I invest in to a Bratta water filter. I have saved lots of dollars. I live alone so a filter last me a full year, if you are a family, you might need two fiter`s per year.

More About Saving Water
Conserve water at home.
Wasting water is one of the biggest ways individuals impact the health of the planet. Taking measures to use less water is something you can start doing right away. If you live in an area with a water shortage, this is even more important for the health of your region's environment. Try to check off as many items as possible from this list:
Wire Cloths Hangers
Most of us have some of these wire cloths hangers in our closets. so when the time comes when you decide to put them in your trush can think again. they are great to use for many good idea`s, I will give you one or two now.
First Idea is for the yard man or woman, you can un-twist the hanger and make a hook at each end, and use it to lift that tree branch that was always hitting you in the head when mowing the lawn. Hook one end of the wire hanger on to a higher branch first and then lift the bottom branch with your hands and hook the other end of the wire hanger to it.
I give them away un-twisted ready to use to my customers to hang thier bird house when the buy one of my hand-crafted houses.

If you live in an area with a water shortage, this is even more important for the health of your region's environment. Try to check off as many items as possible from this list:
- Check and fix any water leaks. A leaky faucet can waste a lot of water.
- Install water-saving devices on your faucets and toilets.
- A low-flow showerhead could be a good start.
- Don't wash dishes with the water running continuously. Use a method that requires less water to get the dishes clean.
- Turn off washing machine's water supply to prevent leaks. It doesn't need to be on all the time.
- Replace old toilets with new ones that use a lot less water.
- Wash and dry only full loads of laundry and dishes. Doing a half-load wastes water.
- Don't use too much water to water your lawn.
- Don't leave the faucet running while you brush your teeth.
